Artist: OverKill Song: SkullKrusher Album: The Years Of Decay Transcribed by Kevin 'Agonymph' Pasman Tuning: CFBE (2 steps down) This is actually my first attempt to transcribe something that is tuned lower than my normal D-tuning (I don't ever tune higher than D) and what better start than my favorite song? I played this one before and I found out that in general, it isn't really hard to play. It has some tricky parts though. The song is really slow and I love this demonic feel it has. I might transcribe its intro ('Playing With Spiders') one day soon too, but since I already know how to play most of the song, I felt this had to be done. Stupid detail: this is one of the only songs on which I use all 4 of the strings on my bass. Enjoy! The song starts with a brilliantly heavy guitar riff (Bobby Gustafson on 'The Years Of Decay', Rob Cannavino starts with this riff on the live-album 'Wrecking Your Neck'), to which the bass and the drums are added later. It goes like this: Intro: E|----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------| B|----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------| F|----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------| C|----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------| |----------------|----------------|------------9---|----------------|| |----------------|----------------|----------------|8-------7-------|| |----------------|----------------|--------7-------|----------------|| |----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|| The riff that follows is probably the main riff to the song, it's the same as the guitar riff it starts with. Riff A: |----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------| |----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------| |--------7-------|----------------|--------7-------|----------------| |0-----------7---|5-------3/5-----|0-----------7---|5-------3/5-----| |----------------|----------------|------------9---|----------------|| |----------------|----------------|----------------|8-------7-------|| |--------7-------|----------------|--------7-------|----------------|| |0-----------7---|5---6---3-5-3---|0---------------|----------------|| The next riff is similar to the riff that is used for the verses. There might be some slight alterations in the note lengths (please listen to the song for the exact details), but tone-wise, the riff goes like this: Riff B (Play twice): |----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|| |----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|| |----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|| |0---0-0-3-------|0---5---5/6-----|0---0-0-3-------|3-----2-----1---|| The riff in the verses is similar to the previous one, it has, however, some significant differences: Riff C (Play twice): |----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------| |----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------| |----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------| |0---0-0-3-------|0---0-0-6---5---|0---0-0-3-----0-|6-5---0-5---3---| |----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|| |----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|| |----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|| |0---0-0-3-------|0---0-0-6---5---|0---0-0-3-----0-|8-7-0-7-6-0-6-5-|0-6-5-0-5-6-3~--|| (1st verse) Standing at the crossroads Which way you gonna go And what you gonna do when it comes Bargaining with gasoline Take a ride on this machine Gonna get me some When it comes Just how far you gonna go Somebody should let you know Once you're in you ain't getting out Put a side your foolish pride So you take just one more ride I don't think you know what it's about Here it comes Then the sequence is repeated; play Riff B twice and play Riff C twice (2nd verse) Riding on a living hell Got another soul to sell Right is right and wrong is wrong Life's a dream On this machine It lasts just about as long So you think you know it all And when you ride you never fall I got some news for you Entice you with a wicked smile Take a ride for a while Seems that the news is true Yes it's true And again Riff B is played twice, this time it's followed by the Chorus Riff (play the open C-string staccato): Riff D (Play twice): |----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|| |----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|| |----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|| |0---0---1---0---|0---0---2---0---|0---0---1---0---|0---0---2-1-0-2-|| (Chorus) Oh take me away On the ride of your life Oh put me away Deathpusher Oh take me away Last time of my life Skullkrusher The first two times the chorus is played, it is followed by a short interlude, more or less a short guitar solo. That solo is supported by the following riff: Riff E (Play twice): |----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|| |----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|| |----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|| |0-------6-------|5---3-------0---|5---3---0---0---|----2-3-1~------|| Then repeat the sequence; play Riff D twice, followed by Riff E twice. (Chorus) Oh take me away On the ride of your life Oh put me away Deathpusher Oh take me away Last time of my life Skullkrusher Now this is where the fast part begins, first hold an open C string for 2 measures, then the fast guitar riff enters and goes on for 8 measures (keep in mind that every second measure is a 5/4 measure!). After that, the bass joins the guitar: Riff F (Play twice): |----------------|--------------------|----------------|--------------------|| |----------------|--------------------|----------------|--------------------|| |----7-------7---|----7---------------|----7-------7---|----7------9-10-8~--|| |0-0-----0-0-----|0-0-----0-0-3-5-3~--|0-0-----0-0-----|0-0-----------------|| And then the bridge starts. The parts with vocals go like this: Riff G (Play twice): |----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|| |----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|| |--------7---5-7-|----------------|--------7---5-7-|--------9-10-8~-|| |0-0-0-0---------|--0-0-0-3-5-3~--|0-0-0-0---------|--0-0-0---------|| (Bridge) Ten thousand nightmares Ten thousand years Ten thousand martyrs crying Ten million tears Then the guitar plays Riff F twice and the bass plays this underneath that riff (the open C-string is played staccato): Fill 1 (Play twice): |----------------|--------------------|----------------|--------------------|| |----------------|--------------------|----------------|--------------------|| |----------------|--------------------|----------------|-----------9-10-8~--|| |0---0---0---0---|0---0---0---3-5-3~--|0---0---0---0---|0---0---0-----------|| Then play Riff G twice, then repeat Fill 1, then play Riff G twice again (Bridge) All the thinking never done All the murder, all the fun Wash the blood from your hands Bury your secrets in the sand And forget Your mouth went dry Shortness on breath Symptoms of fear Symptoms of Death As soon as you enter the measure in which Bobby screams "Death", it goes like this (it's 6/4 measure!): Fill 2: |------------------------|| |------------------------|| |------------------------|| |0-0-2-3-1~--0-0-2-3-1~--|| This is where the live-version of 'Wrecking Your Neck' ends and 'Spiritual Void' starts. The studio-version from 'The Years Of Decay', however, has now almost come to the solo. First there is a short guitar riff with some bass and drums support: Fill 3 (Play 4 times): |----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|--------------|| |----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|--------------|| |----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|--------------|| |0---------------|----------------|----------------|6-----5-----5---|--3---5-3-1---|| There are some slight alterations in this part. Please listen to the song for details. Now, we have finally reached the most brilliant guitar solo in OverKill-history; the double guitar solo of Bobby Gustafson. The bass riff underneath this solo is very easy to play: Riff H (Play 8 times): |----------------|----------------|| |----------------|----------------|| |--------7-----5-|--7-------------|| |0-0-0-0---0-0---|----0-0-3-5-3---|| Then there is a short return to earlier parts of the song, it's pretty similar to Riff D, actually it IS Riff D on double tempo: Riff I (Play 4 times): |----------------|----------------|| |----------------|----------------|| |----------------|----------------|| |0-0-1-0-0-0-2-0-|0-0-1-0-0-0-2102|| Then play Riff E twice (on a slightly higher tempo) and play Riff H 8 times again to finish the solo. After that, return to the beginning of the song; play Riff A twice, then play Riff B twice and then play Riff C twice. (3rd verse) Tracks go on for miles Through the agony and smiles Laying there in pieces on the ground What the hell, you take a chance Krusher call, make your stance When you're dead you never make a sound Racing with the Devil Engine's slowing down Fifty years too early And you're laying underground... You're krushed! Then repeat Riff B twice again and until the song finishes, repeat this new riff until the song is over: Riff J (Repeat and fade): |----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|| |----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|| |----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|| |0---0-0-3-----0-|3-----2-----1---|0-0-0-0-3-----0-|3-----2-----1---|| (Chorus) Oh take me away On the ride of my life Oh put me away Deathpusher Oh take me away Last time of my life Oh take me away Skullkrusher Oh take me away On the ride of my life Oh put me away Deathpusher Oh take me away Oh take me away Oh take me away Skullkrusher
